Conquer Cancer Foundation Announces New Leadership to Help Advance its Mission in Creating a World Free from the Fear of Cancer
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) today announced the appointment and reappointment of several members to its Board of Directors. These oncology and community leaders will play a vital role in developing the philanthropic capacity of the Conquer Cancer Foundation to support its goals of answering the most compelling clinical questions and meeting the real-life needs of patients.
“As progress continues to be made in oncology care and treatment, the Conquer Cancer Foundation is fortunate to have some of the best philanthropic minds leading its mission to create a world free from the fear of cancer,” said Nancy R. Daly, MS, MPH, Executive Director of the Foundation. “These individuals’ knowledge, expertise, and commitment to improving the lives of those impacted by cancer will be of great value to the Foundation. We look forward to working together to support programs and initiatives that improve patient care and advance clinical oncology research.”
Martin J. Murphy, Jr., PhD, DMedSc, was reappointed to the Board for a three-year term, and he was also re-elected to lead the Foundation as its Chair in 2012. The ASCO Board of Directors also reappointed each of the following individuals for a three-year term:
• Richard L. Schilsky, MD (who will serve as Secretary in 2012)
• William C. Penley, MD (who will serve as Treasurer in 2012)
• Robert J. Mayer, MD
Additionally, three new individuals were appointed to the Board of Directors, effective January 1, 2012:
• Ira M. Elegant, Esq., is a partner in Buchbinder & Elegant, P.A., a three-lawyer firm established in 1977 that focuses on civil litigation. Elegant has represented several high profile clients. Previously, he served as Assistant City Attorney for the City of Miami Beach and in-house counsel for a prominent U.S. businessman and philanthropist. Mr. Elegant is the author of "Jurisdiction, Venue and Service of Process," Florida Family Law, Second Edition, 1972; and "Jurisdiction, Venue and Service of Process," Dissolution of Marriage Manual Florida Bar, Continuing Legal Education, 1976, 1979, 1985, Supplement. He is admitted to practice law in Florida at the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Florida, Middle District of Florida, Northern District of Florida, and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. He is also admitted to the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims; the District of Columbia and U.S. Supreme Court; and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit. *Term effective immediately.
• Michael Gordon, JD, is the co-founder, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Investment Officer of Angelo, Gordon and Co., an investment advisory firm specializing in alternative investments. He began his career at L.F. Rothschild in 1970 and became a Managing Director in 1985. Gordon received a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Colby College in 1966 and a Juris Doctorate from Boston University School of Law in 1969. Gordon is a Trustee of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Colby College, and is a Director of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation.
• Thomas G. Roberts, Jr., MD, MSocSc, is a managing member and portfolio manager at Farallon Capital Management, LLC. In addition, Dr. Roberts is a portfolio manager and senior health care analyst at Noonday Asset Management L.P. Prior to his career in finance, Dr. Roberts was an attending oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, an instructor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School, and a visiting scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is board certified in Medical Oncology. Dr. Roberts earned his medical degree from Harvard University. He performed his internal medicine training at the Massachusetts General Hospital and his medical oncology training through the Dana-Farber/Partners Cancer Care Oncology Fellowship Program..
As the philanthropic arm of ASCO, the Foundation supports vitally important clinical research, patient education, and patient advocacy programs that benefit patients today and create new hope for the future. The Conquer Cancer Foundation funds initiatives spearheaded by ASCO and by program partners. Its programs focus on the full spectrum of cancer, from prevention through diagnosis, treatment, end-of-life care, and survivorship.
